Ten tips for the Garden in July
). Prune all the shrubs that have flowered and feed them with all-purpose plant food. It is also well worth, even at this time of year to water shrubs well and mulch them. Make sure to prune any trained fruit trees as well.
). Trim back and feed any roses that have finished their first bloom. However, to combat any pests and diseases on roses that are still in bloom, make sure to spray them.
). Prune back any early blooms such as delphiniums to encourage a second flush of blooms this season.
). With your lawn, if it still isn’t looking lush and green continue feeding it as well as taking the time to use weed killers and moss killers. Try and mow the lawn twice a week if you can, but make sure not to throw the clippings into the compost heap after applying weed killers. Prevent putting lawn clippings in the heap for the first few weeks on applying the weed killers.
). Water containers everyday and hanging baskets twice a day, especially in hot weather and use a liquid feed once a week.
). This is the best month to trim hawthorn hedges, any earlier you will need to trim again and any later you will find it increasingly difficult to cut.
). If your dahlias aren’t growing as strongly as expected encourage healthy growth with the use of tomato plant food. Apply to the plants every 10 to 14 days for best results.
). Remove seed heads of plants as this will encourage them to produce more flower heads.
). Keep an eye out for any pests. July is one of the months where a considerable amount of pest problems occur. When using chemicals make sure you follow the instructions correctly.
). If you want to create some extra summer interest to your garden why not add; Acanthus, a variety of Clematis, Delphiniums or even Veronica. They will look great along the flowerbeds and in containers.
